Libera concert in Guildford
As was rumored before the concert there were to be 41 boys in the choir this evening, there were but that included 10 mini-boys. The staff included the by now well known names, but not mentioned in the program but seen were Ben Crawley and Tiarnan Branson helping with stage management. The setup was different than usual in that the musicians were sitting in front of the podium on which the boys stood. Robert was sitting in the middle in front.
After the customary warning by Cassius to not record anything it started off with Dies irae. The miniboys were sititing in two groups of 5 to either side of the podium. The choir came onto the podium from far behind in two files. A nice start of the concert with Chiaran as soloist with help of Matthew Jansen. Towards the end the mini-boys joined the group in order to participate in the next song, Gloria, which just continued the preceding Dies irae.
Ben, Cassius and Isaac informed us after this of the presence of 41 members of the choir.
Next was the Song of life, for which Isaac did the solo and Steven the piano part. Isaac does not have the power and flexibility of voice yet that Ralph had, but he will grow.
Voca me was next and very nicely done, especially with the high notes of Thomas, who was here the only one with the hood up.
Sanctus was very well done as always.
After this Cassius and Michael U-R informed us of what and how they had to practice and learn and introduced us to Moose.
I vow to Thee my country was next and Matthew Jansen, Dyllan Duffy and Thomas led the way. Especially Matthew shone, what a voice!
For Salva me all the boys had the hood up, except Michael U-R who did the higher notes from behind. Not as far behind though as Matthew R-A used to stand.
Eternal light had a surprise for me, the soloist being Lucas Wood. And very well he did it, impressive, a promise for the future. He was partly supported by Dylan.
After this it was time for Jude to do the introductions of the participants, from the mini-boys to Robert Prizeman.
Then a surprize, a new song: I am dreaming of home. A lovely song based on a French original and with a small but very high solo by Thomas.
The last song before the interval was How shall I sing that Majesty. Also for this song the mini-boys were called in. Matthew Jansen, Jude Collins and Lucas Wood started from in front, they were supported by Thomas for the very high notes.
After the interval the concert continued with Mysterium. As usual it started mysteriously in the dark and some low voices for the first lines, I think I recognised Liams voice here. Other contributions were from Sam Wiggin and especially Lucas Wood. This song overflew into Orinoco flow which had an adapted choreography because of the large number of participants.
After this Michael U-R explained about the robes, pulling Cassius'hood over his face.
Far away was next and saw Isaac and Thomas working together.
The Fountain was better than I have heard before. Josh started on the piano and Matthew Jansen and Thomas D-L did the solo's. Especially Matthew was impressive with both low and high parts.
Grateful heart was next and very well done. Thomas and Michael U-R had solo's
Ave verum was sort of in two parts. The first part saw Sam Wiggin as soloist, after which the well known V-formation was formed with Luke in front. However some of the older boys stayed behind.
Aftyer this Ciaran informed us about the difficult technicalities of singing and made the choir demonstrate some exercises which I could not describe as they were partly in English, partly in Latin and partly in no language at all.
Then How can I keep from singing. The words and melody were the same as before, but I was under the impression that the music had a new arrangement with an important part for Josh on the keyboard.
The mini-boys joined the big boys again for Stay with me. Cassius had a small solo towards the end.
For those that thought Eoghan was out of the running, here he was with Glory to Thee, still with the mini-boys there. It was beautiful.
After this Ben announced the last song, Exultate. A fantastic end to a fantastic concert with a solo by Thomas D-L. Followed of course by Libera as encore for which Eoghan and Dylan did the solos.
As usual I went the next morning, sunday, to the morning service at St. Philip in Norbury. I was not expecting the choir to be there, as it had been a late night for the boys the night before. So I was very surprised when I entered the church to find the whole church choir there practicing with Robert Prizeman. As we say in Holland: Hat off for the boys! They have an extraordinary sense of duty. But it was only natural to see a yawn here and there sometime.
There were about 30 boys and men, all of whom had been at the concert. During the service they sang three beautiful songs, unfortunately not advertised, so I do not know any titles or composers. The first song was in a modern stile, like Penderecki, the second if I remember well a short Sanctus and the third piece was during the communion a Halleluja choir, probably taken from some oratorio. It sounded a bit familiar to me, and was very beautiful. For me an other very nice surprise at St. Philip. And yes, the coffee after the service was also good.

(After this Cassius and Michael U-R informed us of what and how they had to practice and learn and introduced us to Moose.)
Not as far behind though as Matthew R-A used to stand.
Dann kam "How Can I Keep From Singing".
