A Harry Potter play is coming to London next year.
JK Rowling announced the news on her Twitter account this morning, confirming that the
theatre production will be called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. It will premiere at the
Palace Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue in the summer of 2016.
"It will tell a new story, which is the result of a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne,
director John Tiffany and myself," she wrote. "I don't want to say too much more, because
I don't want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans. However, I can say that it is
not a prequel!"
The announcement coincides with the anniversary of the UK release of Rowling's debut novel,
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which hit stores 18 years ago today. So why is this
latest venture not in the form of another book?
"I am confident that when audiences see the play, they will agree that it was the only proper
medium for the story," Rowling explained. "I've had countless offers to extend Harry's story
over the years, but Jack, John and Sonia Friedman are a dream team! It has been a huge
pleasure to share with them (and soon, with you!) this untold part of Harry's story."
A new film, based on another Harry Potter spin-off book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find
Them, is also in the pipeline, starring Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne as lead Newt
Scamander.
Tickets for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will go on sale this autumn. To register, sign up
